What is percolation water cycle?

Percolation is the movement of water through the spaces and cracks in soil and rocks. In the water cycle, percolation happens after precipitation (rain or snow) falls to the ground and is absorbed by the soil. Once the soil is saturated, the excess water percolates through the soil and into the underground water reservoir (aquifer). The water in the aquifer can be used by plants, animals, and humans through wells or springs. Percolation is important for maintaining the water balance on Earth and replenishing the groundwater supply. However, excessive percolation can lead to soil erosion and contamination of the underground water supply.
